Dotbite

A CTO who sits in the room where it is decided

Technical leadership without the full-time hire.

We take the CTO role in companies that need the judgement without the salary. Roadmap, architecture decisions, hiring, and managing whoever is building. A few days a month, in your leadership team. Based in Vienna, working with clients across Europe.

Boritea, qondition and upgr8 have had us in this role.

CTO as a Service in Vienna.

There is an awkward stage where a company has real technical decisions to make and no one senior enough to make them. Too much at stake for the founder to keep guessing, too early for a full-time CTO at a full-time salary. That gap is what this is for.

The work is the ordinary work of the role. Setting the technical direction and saying no to the things that do not serve it. Deciding architecture before it decides itself. Hiring developers and being able to tell in an interview whether someone is good. Managing agencies and freelancers, which mostly means knowing when an estimate is nonsense. Translating between the technical side and the board, in both directions.

Because we build software as well, the advice comes from people who will still be there when it is implemented. That tends to make it more conservative and more specific than advice from someone who never has to live with it.

If you only need a one-off read on a decision, technical consulting is the smaller version of this. If your team needs delivery capacity too, we build as well.

What you get with Dotbite as your CTO

  • A technical direction. Set deliberately, and defended when it needs defending.
  • Architecture decided on purpose. Before the codebase decides for you.
  • Hiring you can trust. We can tell in an interview whether someone is good.
  • Vendors managed. We know when an estimate is nonsense.
  • Translation both ways. Between the engineering side and the board.
  • Delivery capacity too. When the plan needs hands as well as a plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a CTO as a Service actually do?
The ordinary work of the role. At Dotbite that means setting technical direction, deciding architecture before the codebase decides it for you, hiring developers, managing suppliers and translating between engineering and the board. A few days a month, inside your leadership team.
What does it cost?
Far less than a full-time hire, because you pay for the days you need. The arrangement runs as a framework agreement with an agreed monthly scope, so it stays predictable and can grow or shrink as your situation changes.
How much time per month is realistic?
Most engagements sit between two and six days a month. Less than that rarely gives enough continuity to make real decisions, more usually means the company is ready to hire someone permanently.
When is this better than hiring a CTO?
When you have real technical decisions to make and cannot yet justify a full-time salary for them. It also works while you search, because the same person can help you interview candidates and judge whether someone is actually good.
What happens when we hire our own CTO?
We hand over and step back, which is a normal end to this kind of engagement. Often we help find and assess the candidate, then brief them properly, so the transition keeps the context instead of losing it.
