Asko Web

Dashboard for customers of an insurance company

Outline

Brief

Asko provides specialized insurance solutions to customers across Europe, offering tailored coverage designed to address a wide range of insurance needs. With a strong commitment to personalized service and industry expertise, Asko ensures comprehensive protection for both individuals and businesses.

Work

Over time, Asko developed the first version of its customer web portal, built in .NET. However, due to evolving requirements and technological changes, the portal became difficult to maintain. To enhance usability and data quality, Asko decided to rewrite the application for a more efficient and future-proof solution.

Outcome

In a nutshell, we led the complete redesign of Asko’s application, refining requirements down to the API and creating a headless, database-free solution. By abstracting adapter functionalities, the system remains highly flexible while seamlessly integrating with the underlying infrastructure. The result: users can access their policies, insurance data, and all related services in one place with a single login.

Navigating complexity

The biggest challenge of this project was managing the transition of an existing platform while ensuring a seamless user experience. Users had to adapt to changes without disruption, which required careful consideration of UX continuity, interface familiarity, and clear communication about updates. Any disruption could lead to frustration or resistance, making it essential to introduce changes in a way that felt intuitive and minimally invasive.

At the same time, the infrastructure was deeply intertwined with the core policy management system, making it extremely complex to decouple web access from the underlying data. The system had evolved over time, with dependencies that were not initially designed to support modularity. Untangling these components required a thorough understanding of legacy architecture and a strategic approach to restructuring.

A major task was working with the data provider to define API requirements that could support both the old and new systems during the transition period. This involved intense discussions around data availability, latency, and security while ensuring that performance remained consistent. Additionally, we had to navigate potential limitations in data structure and access policies, requiring creative solutions to maintain functionality without extensive rework.

Beyond the technical complexities, change management was another critical factor. Stakeholders across multiple departments had different priorities and concerns, from compliance teams ensuring regulatory adherence to customer support teams preparing for potential user inquiries. Aligning these interests while keeping the project on track added another layer of difficulty.

Objectives

Redefine together

We overcame these challenges through close collaboration with the technical lead of Novas, the data-providing system. By defining clear API requirements based on customer needs, we created structured documentation that streamlined both development and implementation. To ensure efficiency, we took a hands-on approach to project management, minimizing delays and excessive communication loops. This proactive strategy allowed us to focus on delivering a high-quality API quickly, ensuring seamless integration and a future-proof solution.

Simple and clean UX

On the user-facing side, we prioritized continuity by closely aligning with the existing platform’s behavior, avoiding unnecessary new UI elements. This approach ensured that existing customers could transition smoothly with minimal learning effort. To maintain consistency and usability, we developed a dedicated design system tailored specifically to Asko’s needs.

Connecting the dots

Collaborating with Asko on this project was a perfect match. Asko clearly defined our role in IT consulting and technical execution, allowing us to focus on delivering a seamless solution. At the same time, gaining in-depth insights into the insurance industry—understanding policy structures, customer needs, and operational workflows—was an invaluable experience.

Even though some steps took longer than expected, the overall experience was highly rewarding. The outcome—enhanced usability, optimized data accessibility, and a future-ready digital infrastructure—made this project a great success, and we are proud of the impact it has created.

How our role evolved

One of the key aspects of this project was how our role evolved. While initially focused on the technical implementation, we naturally took on a bridging role between Asko and the data provider. This was crucial in streamlining communication, defining API requirements efficiently, and ensuring smooth integration of policy and insurance data into the new system.

Making corporate users happy

To ensure a smooth transition for users, we focused on maintaining a familiar experience by preserving key interactions and minimizing unnecessary interface changes. Rather than introducing drastic UI modifications, we carefully refined existing elements to align with user expectations. This approach reduced the learning curve and helped users adapt effortlessly.
