Darmgesundheit Wien

Colorectal Cancer Screening For All Of Vienna

Outline

Brief

Vienna's colorectal cancer screening offers everyone aged 45 to 75 a free stool test they take at home. Around 540,000 residents are invited by letter. WePrevent is responsible for the process and commissioned us to build the platform for it. It carries everything from the invitation to the follow-up colonoscopy.

Work

Dotbite turned the concept into a running platform. Conception and requirements engineering with every partner, UI/UX design in Figma on the City of Vienna's corporate design, web development of the participant app, the customer care portal and the partner interfaces, testing under load before launch and ongoing support since.

Outcome

The platform went live on 9 June 2026, the day the programme started. By the end of September 2026 the City of Vienna reported 131,250 invitations sent and 18,944 test kits requested. Since launch we have kept developing the platform with WePrevent in regular releases.

Challenges

One start date, many partners

The programme had a fixed start. On 9 June 2026 it opened to the public, and from that day on residents had to be able to register, order a kit and read their result. Every other decision had to fit that date.

The hardest parts we tackled:

  • Many partners, moving specifications: The platform connects to Post, the laboratory and customer care at 1450, among others, each with its own systems and timelines. Requirements kept evolving while we built.
  • Analog as good as digital: A target group aged 45 to 75 needs a path that works without a computer. Not everyone has an email address or wants an account. Residents can register by phone through 1450 and receive their result by post.
  • Health data at the core: The platform handles sensitive health data. Privacy and security were a core requirement from day one and shaped every decision, from the architecture down to each email.
  • Six languages from day one: The platform runs in German, English, Turkish, Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian.

Objectives

One platform for the whole programme

A screening programme has many steps. Invitation, home test, logistics, laboratory, result and follow-up. Our job was to connect them for Vienna on one platform.

For residents the path from registration to result had to be short and clear. Customer care works in the same system, and partners such as Post and the laboratory are connected directly. Fewer interfaces, fewer manual steps and a process that holds up with large numbers of participants.

We chose the stack based on the use case and kept it as simple as possible. Laravel with Blade, Alpine.js and Tailwind. Rendering happens on the server, which to us is a form of security by default, because sensitive data stays on the server. Queues send large waves of emails without slowing down the interface.

Designed in Figma, on the City's design

In a fast-moving environment every stakeholder had to be on board as early as possible. So we first made the whole application visible in Figma. Every screen of the participant app and the customer care portal sits there as one continuous flow, from the landing page to the result. Partners aligned on that basis, and their internal training could start early.

The design follows the corporate design of the City of Vienna. Wiener Melange as the typeface, the City's colour palette and its linear illustration style. On that basis we built a design system of text styles, colour styles and components. Figma stays the reference for every screen, and texts and components in the code are checked against it.

Connecting the dots

A public screening programme only works if every resident can take part and every partner is connected.

Two ways in, one process

Residents register online at darmgesundheit.wien or by phone through 1450. Both paths lead into the same process. The kit arrives by post, the sample goes back through one of 667 post offices and partner outlets in Vienna, and the result arrives online or by letter.

Customer care and partners work in the same process, which keeps the number of interfaces and manual steps low.

Live on time, supported since

The platform went live on 9 June 2026, the day the programme started.

Since launch we have kept developing the platform with WePrevent in regular releases, shaped by what customer care and operations learn every day. Public health in Vienna is familiar ground for us. With LEAD Horizon we built the platform behind PCR testing for the whole city.

A partner who thinks along

For a programme of this size the start date was fixed while the requirements kept moving. Dotbite delivered on time, thought along with every partner and keeps the platform running reliably every day. That is exactly what a public screening programme needs.
